This paper gives a general overview of processes and procedures performed in inland navigation, and in particular covers the aspects of the cross-border data exchange procedures between Member States and non-EU Member States. The main recommendations of the working paper deal with European standards related to electronic information exchange among key authorities involved in cross-border information (especially standardisation work of Electronic Report International), the introduction of River Information Services based on European standards on key sections of the waterway network in the following five years, know-how transfer and education of responsible persons and decision makers, and increasing cooperation between the actors in the cross-border processes.
